Built to honor Isadore and Ida Strauss, who owned Macy’s department store, the statue is maintained by their family. On Broadway at 79th Street is the Apthrop building which is one block square and where Al Pacino once called home. The Ansonia Hotel built in 1899, this Beaux Arts building was once the home of Babe Ruth, Angelina Jolie, Walt Kelly and Natalie Portman. It was known as the “hotel with a farm on the roof,” because for years goats, chicken and dairy cows were kept on the roof and the eggs and milk were collected daily to feed the hotel guests.
